On Sunday, August 27, 2017 the first ever Kindness 5K will be held at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, IL to continue the life, love and light that Katie L. Kloess shared with the Marengo community. Katie, 29, was a victim of a fatal automobile accident on December 15, 2015 in Marengo. Katie lived her life to the fullest, emulating her favorite quote “Be the Change You Want in the World.” As friend, teacher, coach and member of Zion Lutheran Church, her light touched countless people in our community and will shine on for eternity.

Katie’s family has partnered with Concordia University Chicago to host the Kindness 5K. This family-friendly event welcomes participants of all ages, abilities and locations through “run, walk, stroll or virtual” participation. A “Kindness Camp” on site will support #Kindess4Katie efforts locally, regionally and world-wide. Runners are asked to bring non-perishable food items to support a Villa Park food pantry and “pop-tops” for the “Pop Top Dump” collection for Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana Ronald McDonald Houses. A “Kids Zone” will feature family-friendly games and fun for younger spectators who might not be completing the course.

The Kloess family holds nine degrees from Concordia- Chicago where Katie was an award-winning athlete. All proceeds from the Kindness 5K will help fund a scholarship in Katie’s honor that supports a student who shares similar acts of life, love and light.
