Festival season is quickly descending upon us, and it seems as though every city and town hosts some type of event. Marengo is no exception. This year, we will be hosting the nationally-recognized 3-on-3 basketball tournament know as, “Gus Macker.”

Being a nature lover, I am lucky to have a huge window in my office. I can hear the hum of the mowers as Harold Gahl and Frank Boxleitner pass by the window, as content as children on their mowers. They always have a smile on their face as they keep the lawn and ditches clipped.

Many of you had heard that the Marengo Dispatch Center was to be closed, and dispatch services for Marengo Police, Union Police, Marengo Fire, Marengo/ Union Rescue, and Union Fire Department all needed to contract with new dispatch services.

While the City of Marengo approved a balanced budget, we remain under threat from the State of Illinois. Recently, Governor Quinn proposed eliminating state-shared income tax revenue in an effort to balance the state’s budget.

After making many trips out of town to play disc golf, Marengo residents John McGowan and Fred Vroman designed and built a course at the Marengo Park District.

The Marengo-Union Chamber of Commerce (MUCC) has kicked-off a membership drive, offering new members the chance to win a Giant Media Package valued at over $4,000.

The food pantry has had a number of locations throughout its history. In the early nineties, it was located in city hall. The food pantry has also been housed at the water treatment plant and the Covenant Baptist Church garage.

After a successful season, the Marengo Youth Wrestling Club held its annual banquet on April 9, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Union.

The areas of Deerpass Road and Kishwaukee Valley Road, in many ways, are typical of the McHenry County landscape. Gently-rolling fields planted with crops, small farms, and single-family homes create a peaceful and serene landscape.

If you look at the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and 23 or, “the four-way stop,” as we used to call it, you will now see the new strip mall located at this location.
