The Marengo Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni hosted its 2nd Annual Road Rally on May 22, 2011 in Marengo and Union. I was asked to participate in the Road Rally. Though I had not heard of the rally before, I soon discovered it was a scavenger hunt on wheels in Marengo and Union.
We were asked to pick our teammates and received instructions about where to go. Participants were given an assignment sheet with riddles to be answered, as well. All of the teammates had to pick up a playing card at five different locations, such as Corbin’s Exotic Pets in Marengo and Checkers II in Union. Later, whoever had the best hand would win a gift certificate.
“We had a lot of fun,” said Adam Roth, a participant at the event. “[It was] good exercise and team building. [It was also a] great way to try and raise money for the foundation and get some funds [for projects].”
There were other prizes too, such as huge candy bars and certificates for a free game of bowling at Glo-Bowl Fun Center in Marengo. Glo-Bowl, State Farm Insurance, Joe’s Place, Rosati’s, StoneBaker’s Pizza, Rustic Landscaping, Fire & Ice, and Levin’s Shoes & Dry Goods all donated to the event.
The organization was initiated by Marengo residents Ken and Valerie Ebel about a year and a half ago, and has 15 members.
“We support the FFA Club and [agriculture classes] that are taught,” Valerie said. “We participated in a road rally about 15 years ago, and we did one last year just with the alumni members. We decided to do it with the FFA banquet and try to get more members to come in.”
The money that the club raises is used for FFA field trips and the Kevin Ziller Memorial scholarship fund for $250, Valerie said. Devynn Ziller was the recipient of the scholarship this year, she said.
Personally, I thought the Road Rally was a lot of fun! It was filled with excitement. I had a fantastic time with my team; we really worked well together. Some of the questions were difficult, and we were the last ones to finish. However, we had a lot of laughs and we won some prizes. I think all who participated, including myself, would agree that they cannot wait for next year’s Road Rally.
