Buisness Spotlight: Country Gentleman

When Rocco Gailloreto goes to Country Gentleman in Marengo, he said he receives great service like an old-time barber shop.

Penny Fischer, owner of Country Gentleman and a Marengo resident, has been cutting hair in Marengo for seven and a half years. Ten years prior, she attended barber school. Country Gentleman, located at 222 South State Street in Marengo, offers: haircuts, traditional or style cuts; beard trims; mustaches; straight razor and hot lather shaves; and has provided some hair cuts for women and children.

“It’s rewarding,” Fischer said. “There are a lot of interesting people. I [especially] enjoy the older customers. You learn a lot from them.”

Fischer said the current site has been a barber shop for about 90 years. When Jerry Crady retired after 37 years, Fischer purchased the business from him.

“I had existing clientele that I had built up and was also able to retain some of his customers,” she said.

Gailloreto, a Marengo resident, said the atmosphere at Country Gentleman is always “clean and bright.”

“Penny is great at her craft,” he said. “She provides service like an old-fashioned barber shop, with a good hair cut and shaving, along with great conversation. My boys like her too. It is a great place to share what’s going on in town.”

Carl Ahrens, a Marengo resident, said he started going to Country Gentleman when Crady owned the business and continued coming back when Fischer took over. “I love this place,” Ahrens said.

“I love the hospitality and friendship. [Penny also] gave my son his first haircut. He’s three now; and she still cuts his hair.”
